Crazy Weather! College Station, TX Photography

I was driving into College Station from Houston last week and experienced the craziest weather! Above me was this overcast gloomy darkness… The clouds above me…and out in front were black… but right underneath the clouds and ahead of me… it was bright blue with white fluffy clouds…  You can see a little of the clouds on the right…sunsetcsjanuary2

And to the left of me… was the sun setting… and it looked as though it was setting on the earth and kicking up dust… and illuminating that entire part of the sky in this beautifully eerie way…

sunsetcsjanuaryThen it started raining… and I’m not entirely sure how I wasn’t ALL over the road… I mean…I was looking everywhere… opening my sunroof “visor”… to see above me… to the left… straight ahead… and then… I look to the right.  And I see this.

Areyoukiddingme?!

I slam on my breaks.  Find a random driveway.  (It happened to be the driveway to the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital in case you need your horse doctored up… there ya go!).  I turn in… jump out of me car, in the rain…  grabbed my camera, switched my lenses and frantically started shooting…I fly through life, often missing a lot of moments… but…

I DIDN’T WANT TO MISS THIS MOMENT!

So I stand there…The wind: crazy… My doors: slamming… Rain: slapping me in the face… and I’m feeling a little bit like Dorothy in the Wizzard of Oz when she was being tossed through the tornado when she clicked her heals… (except I didn’t click my heals and I wasn’t wearing ruby red slippers). Ha!  Anyway… I stood there Aaaaa-mazed! I mean really?!?  I was in Maui in December and we saw 7 rainbows… and a couple of double rainbows… but I don’t think any of them were quite as magnificent as this! I remember wishing we had sunrises and rainbows like we saw in Maui… And lo and behold.. God gave it to me! IN A PRETTY BIG WAY! :)

I keep looking at these images and kept help but think they symbolize something! The gloomy but sunny… The black clouds… but the orange falling onto them… The STORM…and the rainbow…  It left me speechless.

So I am curious… Do you feel like this symbolizes anything for you?  I want to know!  Leave a comment below and share!

amber - you know what i'm going through in my life right now lacee....and seeing these images gives me hope. that what i'm going through may be a time of emotional darkness and sadness but right on the edge of it all is the warmth of friends who cherish and love me!!! you are truly fabulous my friend! thanks for the blessing of your friendship!February 1, 2010 - 11:46 am

Interview with Collages.net!

Lacy Dagerath Talks with Collages.net

Collages.net recently had the chance to talk with Lacy Dagerath of More Than An Image Photography about her studio and her blog.

How would you describe your studio style?
PJs, a bed, and 5 dogs. Yes, I really have 5 dogs: Tyco, Bella, Brody, Little Man, and Chanel. All joking aside, I would say “non-boring.” I was 23 years old (4 years ago) when I started my business. My mom showed my website to my grandpa who was also a photographer and the first thing he said was, “Those people are not going to like those pictures. They aren’t even looking at the camera!” I thought, I don’t like creating moments, I like capturing them, creatively. It is not my job to coordinate every single shot that I take so that its redundant. It is up to me to make sure the couple, the bride, the family, the children feel comfortable with me so I can get the most natural shots and the best expressions possible. I’ve been told I have the ability to be able to capture people at the peak of their expression. This goes much deeper than knowing how to work my camera, it has everything to do with how you, as a photographer, relate to your clients. I’m vulnerable and I’m honest. I think because of these things, my clients know they can trust me.

What type of photography are you most passionate about?
I don’t think there is a type I’m most passionate about, but I will say this, it’s a toss up between two complete extremes. I love capturing emotion. When you look at a photo and it makes you feel something, in my opinion, it’s what makes a picture great!  There is something very irreplaceable about that. I try to always capture the heart and personality of the person. Many photographers get so caught up in the technical aspect of photography that they lose the reason they are shooting. Again, that’s just my opinion. The other extreme I love is taking pictures as art. One of my favorite pictures was taken while I was in Venice. We were riding on our little boat to get to our hotel and I saw this rusted, blue-green door on this white wall and it intrigued me. I love finding beauty in the mundane, everyday things that people far too often take for granted.

Where did you find your inspiration for your blog’s design?
Sometimes I just need a creative outlet. My mother and I went to a high-fashion home store in downtown Houston and I found this fabric that I absolutely fell in love with. It is a black fabric with an ivory baroque-style pattern. Because I was craving another creative outlet (other than photography), I bought the fabric and made a headboard for my bed. Then, I found a similar black pattern and wanted that as my background for my blog! The blue I use is the blue that is in my current logo.

What was important to you when looking for a blog vendor?
I really wanted something that was incredibly easy to maintain on the back end. I knew it was something I was going to be updating almost daily, so I wanted it to be very easy and manageable. Also, I don’t like advertisements cluttering my space. I pay a yearly fee for my blog to keep that from happening.

Which entry has been your most popular entry this year?
People seem to be terrified of leaving comments, so really I don’t have any idea!

What do you write about on your blog?
I generally post my favorite ten to fifteen shots from every shoot. I know what it is like to be disappointed when I visit a blog and there are no updates so I try to update the blog regularly. Also, from a client’s perspective, I know how great it makes them feel to be featured.

How do you see the blog benefitting your studio?
I think blogs are becoming more popular than studio websites for photographers. Usually a blog means you are continuously changing and updating your work and people want to see the latest and greatest. Aside from that, when you feature clients on your blog, they tell everyone they know to go view your blog. They also let friends and family know about your post through social networking sites and word gets around. It’s really great exposure for any studio.

Do you have any blog stalkers?
I typically have anywhere from 75 to 200 visitors to my blog daily.  I’m not sure who everyone is though!

What advice would you give to photographers who are looking to start a blog or revamp their blog?
Find a blog that works for you. I was recently talking with a friend and fellow photographer who said he wouldn’t consider having a blog because he thought he couldn’t manage it. I think if you choose a blog that is manageable, updating is a breeze! I also think you should find one that you can customize to reflect your style. Details in this business are key. You definitely want your blog to reflect your studio’s style and personality.

If you had to lose one hand in a freak elevator shaft accident which hand would you lose?
My left! I shoot with my right, so I’d be jobless and handless. They don’t make left handed cameras!

If you could drive any car in the world without paying attention to price what would it be?
The Oscar Meyer Wiener mobile. Really!

If you could choose any career other than photographer what would it be?
A professional golfer. A very poor professional golfer. I think I’ve held a golf club once during a game of mini golf, but I won! Only because I cheated, though. ;)

Lizzy - You are one of my most favorite people in the world!!! The whole world! I love you my dear dear friend! Please always stay amazing.February 2, 2010 - 1:31 am

A Different Perspective

I have tried several times to write this …and I keep erasing… I want it to sound “good”… “perfect” but honestly, none of that even matters… I just need to share what is on my heart…and my mind… even if it comes out as some big rambling mess that justdoesntmakesense!  But thats okay… I’m not entirely sure this blog post is for you… I think I might be writing it for me.  I have so many overwhelming thoughts going on inside my head at the moment.  Many of you who live far away and who have never met me want me to write things about myself…to give you some insight as to who I am… ha! I want to say if you could hear me talk on the phone…in about a minute… You’d gather that I’m a little A.D.D… I always have a million things going on… mostly work stuff.  What you see is what you get… I am bubbly, genuine, funny…  (or maybe I’m giving myself a little too much credit!)  ha.

I Just…

I say those things because what I am about to share is something that is very heavy on my heart.

In fact I’m sitting here typing this through tears streaming down my face and snot… well you know… where there are tears, there is snot! :)   So… on a serious note… Edmund Prieto. A very talented photographer in California… a very young talented photographer in California… lost his wife recently.  I have never met this photographer…  but I have admired his work and his heart from afar… and I can not begin to describe how much faith he has.   I just read his recent blog post honoring his wife Brooke…  And I sat here… in tears… and my world stopped for a minute…  I mean… Can you even imagine? Losing your best friend? The love of your life? The one person who knows you inside and out? The one person you know you can go to for physical comfort? Gone?! What?  Now, I have… as my mom would be put.. “been touched by such great loss for my entire life…” but reading Edmunds post about his wife… and his loss… just hit me. HARD.

We are certainly not guaranteed tomorrow.  Why would we live like we are? Why do I live EVERY DAY… like I have to work my heart out… and not embrace or savor my moment… THIS moment.

I look back on 2009… and it was one busy year.  And as much as I love my job.  All of my memories are work-related.  WHAT?! Is that embracing life?  That isn’t what I call living.  Sure I can love my job… but it doesn’t mean that is ALL I have to love.  It’s OKAY for me to love being with family, friends, having dinner parties, traveling etc… But I ALWAYS feel like work has to come first… or if I am going to have some client…who sees me out wondering why I’m not at home editing their pictures! (Don’t get me wrong… I don’t think my clients actually feel this way… I think that I think they feel this way… nevermind, that was confusing.)  I just feel sometimes that when it comes to work… I put it in front of everything else in my life… and I am making a promise to myself… that I can’t do that anymore.  I just can’t.  I need to enjoy this life… I only get one.  ONE.  I can’t re-do it because I took it for granted the first time.  ONE.

And I am going to savor it…

I am going to stop in the middle of working… and go watch a movie… by myself.

I am going to stop working … and go outside and play with my dogs.

I am going to say Yes! when someone asks if I want to do something… instead of saying.. “No, I have to work.”

I am going to stop letting my work getting in the way of living.

There will always be work to do.  Always.

But…

My family won’t always be here.  My friends won’t always be here.  My dogs won’t always be here.

How many more birthdays am I going to miss?

How many more holidays am I going to miss?

(This doesn’t mean I’m going to neglect my brides, clients/friends, business- I’m just going to be more balanced.)

So this is my promise to myself.  I am going to live life in a way that isn’t so consumed by work ALL the time…(I challenge you to do the same… no matter what your profession.)… and maybe my blog posts can be about my life story… and not just about work.  I mean, its my blog… I can do that right? Kind of like… its my party, I can cry if I want to?

Edmund… reading your sweet words about your journey with Brooke and seeing that precious slideshow of your moments together… your memories together… your laughs together… has made me realize that I don’t have those memories myself… And I can’t have those memories unless I make time for them.  So I am making time.  Starting now.

Edmund, you have exhibited the kind of faith I only hope I could have someday.  You are such an inspiration.  Brooke is such an inspiration… I am so thankful, that you embraced and savored all of those moments… every picture… Most people don’t… I don’t. I don’t know what else to say… I admire you… and Brooke. I am so sorry for your loss but I am overjoyed that she is dancing in Heaven.

Brooke is making an impact across the world… only a special person can do that.   :)  Please read Edmunds post here.

Anna - Lacy, my heart truly is breaking for Edmund and his whole family. I definitely know what you mean about having that moment in your life that defines you in this way. I think it would be a beautiful way to carry on Brooke's legacy by allowing her passing to re-shape the way you view priorities. I truly admire your work, but I would love to have you over for dinner as friends more. :) Stop by sometime when you are visiting your mom! *hugs*January 25, 2010 - 9:03 am

brooke - WOW....in tears as well! However, to find the good in it I think it's great that he was able to create an "aha moment" for many people. When you work, you work.....pretty much anything you take a picture of turns to gold! You are such an amazing photographer but more importantly you are an amazing person! You have such a fun-loving, outgoing, and happy personality! Seriously, whether if you are at work or you are describing your dogs to me! You are amazing and deserve a little "you" time....and your family and friends deserve time with you as well! :)January 25, 2010 - 1:37 am

Marisela - Ok, Lacy....So I just read your blog and OMG I am sitting here in tears!!! But oddly enough they are cleansing tears, I really needed that and so true what a wake up call that is, I went on to read Edmunds post...and OMG more tears..lol How beautiful is she and I admire the love he has for her and for God...I can't imagine loosing the one person God has choosen for you to be one with!! You're are right you have one life and one destiny and you have control over how you choose to live it...I think everybody fails to realize that we often take this precious God given life for granted (including myslef) So I am with you on what you wrote on your blog...take time out of your busy life and appreciate the bigger things like God, yourself, family, and friends!! Love you Lacy and if you need anything I am always here for you!! Now when are you coming down so we can have fun like the old day...lol Miss and Love you Lace more than you know and I was truly blessed the day God brought you and your family into my life!! xoxoxoxo:)January 23, 2010 - 4:22 pm

Andrea - I read your post, went and read his post, and then watched the slideshow. I'm a mess! What an amazing post this is of yours!! I am so proud and happy for you. Edmund and Brooke are an inspriation to us all. Life is so short and precious, we ALL forget that. Thank you to you and Edmund for the reminder. :) Love you!January 20, 2010 - 5:29 pm
